Chute and Corral Safety

Handling facilities are where animals and handlers come into closest contact. Proper facility use and maintenance are key to keeping everyone safe.

Facility Inspection

Before each use:

  • Check all gates for proper operation
  • Inspect hinges, latches, and chains
  • Look for broken boards, bent pipes, or sharp edges
  • Ensure non-slip footing is in place
  • Verify head gates and squeeze chutes function properly
  • Test hydraulic or pneumatic systems if applicable

Squeeze Chute Operation

When using squeeze chutes:

  • Understand your specific equipment before operating
  • Never reach into the chute while an animal is unsecured
  • Keep hands away from pinch points
  • Position yourself to the side, not directly behind
  • Use proper head restraint before any procedures
  • Release pressure gradually

Crowding Tub and Alley Safety

Moving animals through facilities:

  • Never overcrowd the tub or alley
  • Fill to half capacity for calm movement
  • Keep crowding gates in good repair
  • Watch for animals turning back
  • Stand outside the swing of crowding gates
  • Use curved alleys to take advantage of cattle's natural movement

Escape Route Planning

Your safety depends on escape options:

  • Know where all man-gates are located
  • Ensure escape routes aren't blocked
  • Practice accessing escape routes
  • Install man-gates every 12-15 feet in working alleys
  • Gates should swing both directions when possible

Loading and Unloading

High-risk times requiring extra vigilance:

  • Ensure trailer and chute are aligned
  • Check footing on ramps and in trailers
  • Never stand in the gap between chute and trailer
  • Use solid loading chute sides to prevent leg injuries
  • Allow animals to move at their own pace
  • Watch for animals attempting to jump or turn back

Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance prevents accidents:

  • Lubricate all moving parts weekly during heavy use
  • Replace worn or broken components immediately
  • Paint or replace rusty surfaces
  • Maintain proper footing - add sand or rubber mats
  • Document maintenance and repairs
