About This Guide

Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) are the most effective safety device on tractors, but only if they're intact and properly maintained. This guide helps you inspect ROPS to ensure they'll protect you when you need them.

A ROPS only protects you if you stay inside the protective zone, which means wearing your seat belt. Damaged, modified, or improperly mounted ROPS may fail during a rollover. ROPS are tested and certified as a system, and modifications void the protection.

ROPS INSPECTION GUIDE

WHAT IS A ROPS?

A Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) is a cab or frame designed to create a protected zone around the operator during a rollover. ROPS are:

  • Tested to standards (SAE J2194, OSHA, ISO)
  • Designed for specific tractors (not universal)
  • Engineered as a system with mounting hardware
  • Only effective with seat belt use

Types of ROPS

  • Most common on utility tractors
  • May be foldable for low-clearance work
  • Common on larger tractors
  • May include partial cab enclosure
  • Weather protection plus rollover protection
  • Must meet same structural standards

ANNUAL ROPS INSPECTION

Before You Begin

  • Torque wrench
  • Correct torque specifications for your tractor
  • Measuring tape
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Camera for documentation
  • Engage parking brake
  • Turn off engine
  • Remove key
  • Allow to cool if recently operated

A ROPS + Seat Belt = Over 95% reduction in rollover fatality risk. One without the other provides significantly less protection.
