Algae Monitoring

  • [ ] Inspect all water sources for algae growth
  • [ ] Check for blue-green algae blooms (DO NOT USE IF PRESENT)
  • [ ] Clean tanks of visible algae
  • [ ] Treat tanks with approved algaecides if needed
  • [ ] Document any bloom events

Heat Stress Prevention

  • [ ] Verify shade near water sources
  • [ ] Check water temperature (should be <85°F ideal)
  • [ ] Ensure multiple access points (no crowding)
  • [ ] Monitor cattle for heat stress signs
  • [ ] Consider additional water stations for heat waves

Monthly Summer Tasks

Infrastructure Maintenance

  • [ ] Scrub and clean tanks (monthly minimum)
  • [ ] Check pump output/flow rates
  • [ ] Inspect pipelines for leaks
  • [ ] Test well recovery rate
  • [ ] Verify overflow drainage working

Water Quality Monitoring

  • [ ] Visual inspection of all sources
  • [ ] Smell test (any sulfur/decay odor)
  • [ ] Test if cattle behavior changes
  • [ ] Check pond levels and concentration

Summer Emergency Triggers

  • [ ] Dead wildlife in/near water → Remove, test water
  • [ ] Cattle refusing water → Investigate cause
  • [ ] Neurological signs in cattle → Consider water cause
  • [ ] Rapid pond level drop → Find alternative
