Tractor Safety Fundamentals

Tractors are the workhorses of ranch operations, but they're also one of the leading causes of agricultural fatalities. Understanding proper safety procedures can save your life.

Rollover Protection

Tractor rollovers account for nearly half of all tractor-related deaths. Protect yourself by:

• Always using a tractor equipped with a Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS)
• Wearing your seatbelt when ROPS is installed
• Avoiding steep slopes and uneven terrain when possible
• Reducing speed when turning or on inclines
• Keeping the front-end loader low when traveling

Pre-Operation Checklist

Before starting any tractor:

• Walk around and inspect for damage, leaks, or obstructions
• Check tire pressure and condition
• Verify all guards and shields are in place
• Test brakes, steering, and lights
• Ensure mirrors are adjusted properly
• Check fluid levels (oil, hydraulic, coolant)

Safe Operating Practices

While operating:

• Never allow extra riders on the tractor
• Mount and dismount facing the tractor, using three-point contact
• Keep PTO shields in place at all times
• Disengage PTO before dismounting
• Set parking brake when stopped
• Lower implements to ground before leaving seat

Avoiding Runovers

Runover incidents often occur when:

• Operators fall while mounting/dismounting
• Bystanders are in blind spots
• Children are playing near equipment

Emergency Procedures

If a rollover occurs:

• Do not attempt to jump clear - hold tight to steering wheel
• Let the ROPS and seatbelt protect you
• Stay in the protective zone until tractor stops moving
