Welding and Cutting Safety on the Ranch

Welding and cutting are essential skills for ranch maintenance, from repairing equipment to building fences. These processes create extreme hazards including fire, toxic fumes, radiation burns, and explosions.

Fire Prevention

Welding and cutting start more ranch fires than almost any other activity. Before any hot work:

  • Clear combustible materials within 35 feet
  • Have a fire extinguisher within reach (not behind you)
  • Wet down dry grass and vegetation
  • Assign a fire watch to monitor for 30 minutes after work
  • Never weld near hay, grain, or fuel storage
  • Check for smoldering materials before leaving

Personal Protective Equipment

Eye and Face Protection

  • Welding helmet with proper shade lens (#10-13 for arc welding)
  • Safety glasses under helmet
  • Cutting goggles (#5 shade) for oxy-fuel cutting
  • Never look at arc without protection - even briefly

Body Protection

  • Leather welding jacket or flame-resistant long sleeves
  • Leather gloves extending past wrist
  • Leather apron for heavy work
  • Leather boots - no tennis shoes
  • Cuffless pants over boots (to prevent sparks falling in)

Respiratory Protection

  • Work outdoors or with adequate ventilation
  • Use respirator when welding galvanized, painted, or coated metals
  • Position yourself upwind of fumes
  • Never weld in confined spaces without proper ventilation

Gas Cylinder Safety

  • Store cylinders upright, secured to prevent falling
  • Keep oxygen and fuel gas cylinders 20 feet apart or separated by fire wall
  • Never use oil or grease on regulators
  • Transport cylinders secured in upright position
  • Check for leaks with soapy water, never flame
  • Close valves when not in use

Electrical Safety (Arc Welding)

  • Inspect cables for damage before use
  • Never weld in wet conditions
  • Ground work properly
  • Keep cables clear of pinch points
  • Don't touch electrode and ground simultaneously

Hot Weather Considerations

  • Take frequent breaks to prevent heat stress
  • Stay hydrated
  • Watch for heat exhaustion symptoms
  • Consider working during cooler hours
