\"Is This Urgent?\" Assessment Tool: Design Specification

Design specification for an interactive decision tree that helps producers quickly assess whether a cattle health situation requires emergency action, same-day attention, or monitoring.

RanchSafety Team January 20, 2026 5 min read

Tool Overview

Purpose

This tool helps producers quickly assess whether a cattle health situation requires emergency action, same-day attention, or can safely be monitored. It guides users through key questions to reach an appropriate recommendation.

Primary Goal

The goal is to reduce both under-reaction (missing emergencies) and over-reaction (emergency calls for non-urgent issues) by providing structured decision support.

Tool Structure

  • Format: Branching decision tree / guided questionnaire
  • Time to Complete: 1-3 minutes
  • Output: Urgency rating + recommended action
  • Mobile Optimized: Essential, as this may be used in the field or barn

Entry Point Categories

User selects primary concern:

  • Breathing/Respiratory Problem
  • Not Eating/Drinking
  • Down and Can't Get Up
  • Lameness
  • Eye Problem
  • Diarrhea/Scours
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Behavioral Change
  • Calving Problem
  • Found Dead Animal
  • Something Else
